How to Create a Custom Window Plan | The Summit Estate
24 July 2024 –
In The Summit Estate, Shea and the design team created a custom window plan—with grids and without—to add homey character to some spaces and let the view be showcased in others. Find out her thoughts behind the grids versus no grids debate and get tips for creating your own custom window plan, whether you’re building from the ground up or are planning to replace your home’s existing windows in the future.
“I am of the mindset that when you have glass that has no grids throughout the entire home, you lose a little bit of hominess,” Shea starts, “and so I usually look for opportunities to incorporate grids in a couple of spaces.” Even if it’s just a breezeway or smaller moments in more intimate rooms, Shea endorses the idea of forgoing having to choose all grids or no grids, and instead, incorporating both.
In The Summit Estate, Shea and the design team came up with a formula and followed it throughout the entirety of the house. “We said all the big door systems are going to be clear glass so that you look out to the view, but then if we have a moment where we can create a paned effect, like on the stairwell or the breezeway, we’ll add grids,” Shea explains. The grids add “a bit more personality,” she adds. “It’s all about the mix to get the Studio McGee aesthetic.”
